The internet provides numerous e-learning resources in the medical field as well as related disciplines. Designed to illustrate and explain complex medical facts using a combination of text, images, sounds, video and animation, these resources complement traditional learning programs. The spectrum includes resources as diverse in complexity as simulations of routine medical examinations and operations, tutorial systems interacting with users, image databases, collections of case reports, video recordings of lectures, predominantly text-based learning materials, ebooks and pure scripts. In order to expand and improve the range of such resources offered at the University Hospital of Mannheim, the Medical Scientific Library of the Faculty for Clinical Medicine Mannheim (MWB) in cooperation with Heidelberg University Library, the Computing Center of Mannheim University and the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University provides its users with a database of interesting e-learning links for doctors, medical students and nursing staff.
The e-learning resources included in the database can be searched by different criteria such as medical specialities, categories (e.g. image databases, simulations, video collections) title and keywords. Additionaly, these links are accompanied by short descriptive comments. As the project develops the resources selected are supposed to be evaluated by representatives of the respective medical specialties.
The Mannheim Medical Library's link collection of free e-books was significantly expanded by inclusion of a database created by the Scientific Library of Bayer Group Pharma. Both collections are now included in one database which can also be searched by different criteria such as author, title and keywords.
